Mike Rubbo is happy to give talks on a number of subjects either
to High School/University students or adults. For students, the
following topics suggested.
1. Shakepeare and his writing. The great puzzle.
In this talk, Mike explores the theory that he advances in his
feature documentary, Much Ado About Something. Was
there a hidden hand working behind the Bard, contributing to the
works we know as Shakespeare's? For more information on this topic,
explore the web site. For a young audience, this talk also explores
what constitutes the truth. How do we know something is true?
Mike shows excepts of his film with this talk.
50 min.
2. Making documentaries. The search for truth in real life.
Mike has spent a life time making award winning documentaries
(see his personal site) He has also been Head of Documentaries
at the ABC, and Executive Producer of Race Around the World.
Now, he has his own mini DV camera, and is making documentaries
around the world, programs that he sells to the ABC, BBC and US
public Television. He explains to students how he get his ideas
and then how these ideas become films. The secret of making documentaries
is the ability to get access to interesting people at key moments
in their lives. Mike speaks about getting this access in a way
which is relevant to any student creatively observing and relating
to the world around them. He ends this talk with some thoughts
on ethics. What do you have the right to show? Mike will show
excerpts from Race Around the World and documentaries
he has made.
50 min.
3. Documentaries and fiction, different ways of seeing the world.
As well as making documentaries, Mike has written and directed
four feature films, one of which, Vincent and Me,
won an Emmy. He is able to speak about the difference in making
fiction and documentary is a way which will be very interesting
to students trying to relate to the media world in which they
live. Excerpts of his fiction and documentaries will be shown.
50 Min
For adult Audiences.
Variations on the above themes will also make interesting talks
for adult audiences.
Shakespeare, the man Behind the Myth.
For sophisticated management seminars, Mike suggests that his
talk on Shakespeare, the Man behind the Myth, makes for a wonderful
intellectual encounter. This talk is guaranteed to stimulate executives
who need to be jumped out of existing thought ruts. A wonderful
way to start a retreat or an extended management encounter. Length
as required.
1hr. plus or minus.
